Homework 1

Due Thursday, 5 June 2003. Make sure you're doing problems in the book! (Check the pages given to be sure.) Credit will not be given for the wrong problems!

  1. Chapter 2, Problems 5-8, page 63. These will be graded as one "short answer" type of problem. Be sure to state your reasoning on each!
  2. Chapter 2, Problem 11, page 64
  3. Chapter 2, Problem 12, page 64
  4. Chapter 3, Problems 2 and 5, page 110. As in 1, these will be graded as one "short answer" question.

Essay Question

Should Astronomy 1110 (this class) count towards the science requirement? Either yes or no is acceptable, but you need to state a clear case for whichever you chose! You can also address the broader question, "Should the College of Arts and Sciences have a science requirement?" When you are composing your arguments, you might want to consider science's role in our society, the usefulness of astronomy, the limited time you have in college, and what intangiable skills (as oppose to astronomy knowledge) you might pick up in such a class as this one.

Remember to turn this in seperately!
